Laura Sweeney, CNM

Certified Nurse Midwife

Born and raised in north Texas, Laura has lived in Colorado for the past 20 years. Upon graduating from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center with a Master of Science in Nurse Midwifery, she moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to begin her career and was, for a time, the only nurse midwife in the city. After building a robust practice in Tulsa, she returned to Colorado in 1999.  Although Laura was born in Texas, she calls Colorado her home. Her passions are running with her dog, and biking, hiking and skiing with her husband and three children in the mountains throughout Colorado and neighboring Utah.

Childbirth is one of the most significant events in a woman’s life. My primary goal is to educate women and their families so they are able to make informed decisions throughout their pregnancy and childbirth in order to achieve the best outcome for a healthy and satisfying birth experience.

What makes Colorado home to you?

The outdoors.

What are your passions outside of work?

Running, mountain biking, and hiking.

Why did you become a Midwife?

I am passionate about caring for women and helping expectant mothers achieve their most optimal and satisfying birth experience.

What in your career are you most proud?

I had the privilege of starting a nurse midwifery practice in Tulsa, Ok in 1993.  At the time I was the only CNM who had hospital privileges in Tulsa.  It was an exciting time for me to introduce midwifery to the community and watch my practice grow. Today, Nurse-midwifery is thriving in that community and CNMs have privileges in multiple area hospitals there.

I feel that childbirth is one of the most significant events in a woman's life. In many cases, what women actually experience in childbirth falls very short of what their expectations were. I feel very proud of the fact that I am able to help women have very positive feelings about their experience in childbirth, even if that experience is not exactly what they had hoped for.

Over the course of my career I have taught nurse midwife and nurse practitioner students, as well as family practice residents. I feel that not only have I been able to teach them valuable skills, but that I also made a positive impact on their learning experience.

What is the most important part of your job?

I feel that one of the most important things I can do as a midwife is to educate women and their families so they are able to make informed decisions throughout pregnancy, childbirth and their reproductive lifespan.  It is my goal that every woman I care for is fully informed and empowered to then achieve their health goals, as well as their most optimal childbirth experience.
